Ted--good luck finding a work-around for the blog issue. I definitely enjoy doing these types of activities much more now that I've gotten into the blogging habit, and I always love ways to reduce the paper-shuffling!

Having used this lesson from the SSF series, I love the assignment, but have difficulty with the paper-shuffling. Blogs work great for this sort of thing. I'd like to try using Moodle for this, but we're still running an older version of Moodle w/o a good blogging module. Oh well.

Well, I can't take total credit for the questions--my SSF book has been a treasure trove--but I think you're right in that students need interesting prompts that guide and surprise them, not just a question like "What did you think of this chapter?" That can fly in discussion, where you can expand and stimulate, but in writing, I think the prompts have to be carefully shaped. The first two questions especially have engendered unexpected responses for both me and the student, which is great! I'm working on how to do this for all my texts, and I have an entry coming soon about the blogs my students are doing for "Catcher in the Rye" as well.

You ask great questions....99% of the time the responses to exercises like these are visibly overflowing with boredom because the questions being asked are so lacking in creativity...your questions made me want to pick up Hamlet and answer them!
