  4. Hi! Stumbling upon your blog through Huf Post on twitter, I bookmarked you on diigo right away! I find your posts inspiring! I have been teaching English at a public school in the Midwest for 14 years now. This year I have one section of freshmen honors and two regular sections. We are currently reading The Odyssey. I printed one of the graphic organizers you had marked on “Elements of the Epic Hero.”
In addition to teaching freshmen, I also teach two sections of junior English which emphasizes American literature. We are currently reading captivity narratives. Soon we will begin Scarlet Letter.

I noticed that you are a fan of Facebook. I am a member of it as well as twitter. Our school has very strict internet usage policies that block all social networking outlets. I find this frustrating because the students are highly motivated by these networks! I want my students to keep an online journal, but am a little unsure as to which one is the easiest and cheapest to use. I tried edublogs, but this seems complicated for my students to handle. Do you have any suggestions for a simple webbased journal that would not be blocked by our school’s filter? Thanks for your great posts! I feel like I know you by reading you. I have three children. My youngest son is seven as just entered the second grade. I know what you mean by summer sleepovers and movie nights! I wish you the best of luck for the upcoming school year. You seem to have a lot on the ball!

  5. Dawn– I’m so glad that you found something useful poking around here on my little site! As far as blog/journal sites, have you tried setting up a Ning? I think those can be kept totally private for members only– if you have a tech department or coordinator, see if Ning sites are allowed. I am lucky in that our school uses Microsoft’s Sharepoint program to maintain our teacher websites, and there are blog and discussion board functions available there. I haven’t taken advantage of them yet thought, but that’s definitely on my ever-growing to-do list!

You might also want to check out HuffEnglish.com– Dana Huff does amazing things with students and technology and she may have a better tip.

Hope your youngest boy is enjoying second grade– we’re anxious awaiting Monday, the girls’ first day of second grade!

    • Dawn

Wow! I had lost track of your blog until this evening when I was just looking back through some bookmarks and came across this comment I had written to you last year.
Thanks for the helpful info on nings. Hope you and your family are well. I liked reading your post about not judging other mothers. Take care!:)

      • Good luck, Dawn, and feel free to stop by anytime!

    +1

    • Hi Aedan! Does your school block Ning websites? I think that might be a good substitute for Facebook-style interaction, if your school allows. As far as student blogs, I have had college students set up their own blogs through WordPress or Blogger–both can be ad-free, but again, I don’t know about your school’s filter. It can be very frustrating to try and be creative and blocked by your own institution–best of luck on that one! As for a lot on the ball, I don’t know how you do it with a third kid! Thanks for stopping by–come back anytime!
